 Here’s what our British friends are up to now.

Whenever I read of research that involves the manipulation of human reproductive cells I am reminded of the horrors experienced by people on whom embryonic stem cells were used. This is not an article the NYT was likely to carry.

“Researchers in China met with a disastrous result.  Fetal tissue injected into a patient's brain produced temporary improvement, but within two years the patient developed a brain tumor and died.  An autopsy revealed that the fetal cells had taken root, but had then metamorphed into other types of human tissue - hair, skin and bone.  These grew into the tumor, which killed the patient.”

“In some of the patients, the implanted embryonic cells apparently grew too well, churning out so much of a chemical that controls movement that they writhed and jerked uncontrollably.  Dr. Paul E. Greene called the uncontrollable movements developed by some patients as "absolutely devastating."  He said, "They chew constantly, their fingers go up and down, their writs flex and distend.  It's a real nightmare.”

Two Large Gulfs: The One with the Oil, and the One with the Administration's Credibility

It feels like we've seen three catastrophes in the Gulf Coast in the past month. The first was the explosion that killed eleven workers; even if nothing else had happened, we would have had to reevaluate (not cancel, but reexamine) our views on offshore oil drilling to figure out just why this happened, and how much danger there was to the men (and women?) who would be out there extracting this oil.

The second was the platform sinking to the bottom of the ocean; I figure that sort of thing complicates the forensic investigation of just why this terrible disaster occurred.

But the third is the fact that it's now been a month and this well is still leaking like federal workers who didn't like Bush administration proposals. The New York Times's Bob Herbert tends to hyperventilate at the best of times, but I'll bet some folks on the right find themselves nodding a bit: "The response of the Obama administration and the general public to this latest outrage at the hands of a giant, politically connected corporation has been embarrassingly tepid. . . . The fact that 11 human beings were killed in the Deepwater Horizon explosion (their bodies never found) has become, at best, an afterthought. BP counts its profits in the billions, and, therefore, it's important. The 11 men working on the rig were no more important in the current American scheme of things than the oystermen losing their livelihoods along the gulf, or the wildlife doomed to die in an environment fouled by BP's oil, or the waters that will be left unfit for ordinary families to swim and boat in. This is the bitter reality of the American present, a period in which big business has cemented an unholy alliance with big government against the interests of ordinary Americans, who, of course, are the great majority of Americans. The great majority of Americans no longer matter."

Of course, we might add a few more examples to those unholy business-government partnerships: TARP, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, General Motors using government money to pay back a government loan and then spending more government money to run commercials bragging about paying back their government loan, and so on . . .
The liberals at FireDogLake, among those least worried about being team players: "Now the White House is having a hissy behind closed doors with the media because dammitall, they can't stop asking questions about the spill. Oh that'll work, that'll make a difference; the biggest environmental disaster our country has experienced will go away if only the media shuts up about it."

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has decided to go his own way to protect his state; meanwhile, Capt. Edwin Stanton, who heads up the Coast Guard's response, is taking blame: "'The governor is right. It's too slow, and if it's anybody's fault, it's mine, for not pushing (BP) hard enough perhaps,' Stanton said.'We did have a problem with getting boom down here to begin with, but there seems to be boom that is in the staging areas that needs to be put out'" Later he called himself "slow and dumb," which I'm guessing was sarcasm.

Sarah Palin’s Remarks on a Pro-Life Agenda

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin spoke at the Susan B. Anthony List celebration of life breakfast. In her remarks she said she understood how some women might consider abortion, citing her own experiences as the mother of a child with Down syndrome and the parent of an unwed teenage mother. Calling Republican women "mama grizzlies," she urged the audience to oppose the Obama administration and criticized the new health care reform law.

 

Help True Conservatives Win in November

It seems like the only Congressional candidate we can support in NE Ohio is Tom Ganley. It might be a good idea to start a committee to do research on the internet and determine which current candidates (Congress and Senate) support and live the 912 values and truly support the Constitution.

Once the research is done, the list can be posted on a website or distributed to 912 members. Then we can each contribute to their campaigns on a monthly basis. We each can contribute what we can afford. Send them $5, $10 or even $25 a month. They may not be our Congressmen, but they support our values and we should support them.

I believe that the ICaucus Group in Texas has "vetted" 56 candidates and they are supporting them with dollars and volunteers. This is just one way to support the restoration of our Constitution.

When Your Body Becomes Property of the State

Don’t like redistribution of your wealth? What about redistribution of your bodily organs?

I was researching another matter when I learned at the NCBC that the state of New York may be initiating the first step.

“May 7, 2010. Assemblyman Richard Brodsky of New York State has introduced a bill that would set aside “informed consent” for organ donation and substitute in its place “presumed consent.” Under this legislation, the body of the person would be viewed as the possession of the state, and not that of the family, unless the individual made a specific indication or statement that his organs should not be removed without his permission. …

Proposals for presumed consent encourage us to view the human body as a commodity, whose parts can be harvested for the benefit of others. …violates the inherent dignity of the body, which is an essential component of a human person. Similarly, removing organs without consent treats the body of the deceased in a utilitarian manner.“

Georgia Seniors Told They Can't Pray Before Meals

PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. -- Preston Blackwelder proudly showed off a painting of his grandmother that had hung next to the front door of his Port Wentworth home.

She was the woman who led him to God, Blackwelder said Friday.

And with that firm religious footing, Blackwelder said it would be preposterous to stop praying before meals at Port Wentworth's Ed Young Senior Citizens Center near Savannah because of a federal guideline.

"She would say pray anyway," Blackwelder said of his grandmother. "She'd say don't listen."

But Senior Citizens Inc. officials said Friday the meals they are contracted by the city to provide to Ed Young visitors are mostly covered with federal money, which ushers in the burden of separating church and state.

On Thursday, the usual open prayer before meals at the center was traded in for a moment of silence.

The dilemma is being hashed out by the Port Wentworth city attorney, said Mayor Glenn "Pig" Jones.

Tim Rutherford, Senior Citizens Inc. vice president, said some of his staff recently visited the center and noticed people praying shortly before lunch was served. Rutherford said his company provides meals like baked chicken, steak tips and rice and salads at a cost of about $6 a plate. Seniors taking the meals pay 55 cents and federal money foots the rest of the bill, Rutherford said.

"We can't scoff at their rules," he said of federal authorities. "It's a part of the operational guidelines."

Obama biggest recipient of BP cash

While the BP oil geyser pumps millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama and members of Congress may have to answer for the millions in campaign contributions they’ve taken from the oil and gas giant over the years.

BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company’s political action committees — $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals.

During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Joe the Plumber is plunging into party politics.

Samuel "Joe" Wurzelbacher, who was hailed by Republican John McCain's presidential campaign in 2008, won one of nearly 400 seats on the local Republican Party committee in Ohio's Lucas County.
But don't call him Joe the Politician just yet.

Chinese accused of vast trade in organs. Harvests come from religious dissidents.

China's hidden policy of executing prisoners of the forbidden quasi-Buddhist group Falun Gong and harvesting their organs for worldwide sale has been expanded to include Tibetans, "house church" Christians and Muslim Uighurs, human rights activists said Monday.

In a news conference on Capitol Hill, several speakers, including attorney David Matas of B'nai Brith Canada and Ethan Gutmann of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, said their investigations have unearthed a grisly trade in which an estimated 9,000 members of Falun Gong have been executed for their corneas, lungs, livers, kidneys and skins.Read it here.
