The August 18th meeting of The 9-12 Project in Mentor, OH.
7700 Clocktower Drive
Room A2101
Kirtland, OH 44094
About the American Policy Roundtable
A generation ago, a handful of "ordinary people" began meeting together out of a growing concern for America. Their conversations, prayers, and research led to the founding of an "extraordinary" public policy effort that would blossom into the American Policy Roundtable.
Recognizing that America is - at its core - a commitment to ideas and principles, the Roundtable was established with the mission of restoring the historic Judeo-Christian principles to American public policy. The Roundtable seeks to fulfill this mission statement by meeting three core objectives:
1) Rekindling the American Spirit -- by telling the story of Liberty everyday.
2) Building networks of leaders, who will help others join in the adventure of responsible citizenship.
3) Overcoming evil in civil society by promoting positive alternatives in public policy. To accomplish these objectives the Roundtable model is built upon state-based public policy organizations, established in strategic states, all working to change America from "the bottom-up." Each state-based Roundtable organization serves under the auspices of the Board of Trustees of the American Policy Roundtable.
Impacting public policy is a process that requires multiple areas of activity. Competing in the realm of ideas is critical, but alone cannot prevail in a Constitutional Republic. Good government also requires constant vigilance in the Legislative and Judicial process as well as a constant flow of new leaders to serve in public office. The Roundtable model incorporates the necessity of this "three-pronged" approach to public policy.
The meeting is at Lakeland Community College in the A Building (behind the clocktower). There will be signs up to help you find the room. The room, A2101, is on the second floor. Yesterday we were collecting signatures for the Ohio Health Care Freedom Amendment.
We set up in front of Timothy Allen Jewelers on Mentor Avenue. The News-Herald was there and wrote a nice article. You can read about it here:

It was a great event with lots of people signing. Betsy Ross and Sam Adams stopped by for a while and we appreciate their help.
U.S. Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH) is renewing his call that Gov. Ted Strickland form an independent, bipartisan oversight board to monitor federal stimulus spending after a TV report that state officials used stimulus money for the "Cash for Appliances" rebate program to hire a Texas company that outsourced call center duties/jobs to Central America.
LaTourette and several other House Republicans, including Leader John Boehner (R-OH), wrote Strickland in March, 2009 and November, 2009, urging the creation of the stimulus oversight board.
Strickland told them an oversight board wasn't necessary and that he favored a Deputy Inspector General.
LaTourette said he can't believe stimulus funds intended to spur hiring in Ohio were used to hire a Texas company that outsourced the work to another country.
"This just reinforces the need to have better oversight over the stimulus funds," LaTourette said.
According to LaTourette, there was a televised report by WCMH-TV, the NBC affiliate in Columbus, where an Ohio state official defended the hiring of Texas-based Parago, Inc., since it had experience with rebate programs, but acknowledged she didn't know the Texas company would outsource the work.
The WCMH report said the state signed a contract worth about $500,000 with Parago to run Ohio's appliance rebate plan because it had experience with rebate programs, according to LaTourette.
"It's no wonder only 6 percent of Americans believe that the Stimulus Bill created any jobs. To be fair, it does look like Governor Strickland used the funds to create some jobs -- in Central America," LaTourette said.
"To suggest an Ohio company couldn't be trusted to run the appliance rebate program is insulting, and paying a Texas company nearly half a million dollars to use a call center in Central America is astounding. This is not 'Cash for Appliances,' it's 'Cash for Incompetence.'"
During the report, LaTourette says WCMH's Patrick Preston interviewed Nadeane Howard, Director of the Ohio Department of Development's Energy Resource Division.
Howard was asked why a Texas company was running the $10 million Ohio appliance rebate program instead of an Ohio company.
"Ohio has one of the largest Energy Star rebate programs in the country," Howard says, in the report. "We could not trust it to someone who had not done this kind of work before."
Howard further said ODOD stands behind its decision to hire the Texas firm even though it did not hire Americans to answer phones at the call center.
Howard was asked specifically if she knew the company would outsource the call center duties to another country.
"We did not know that initially. The moment we found out, the director of this agency issued a request to Parago to please on-shore their call center," Howard told Preston.
The company did not comply with the request and LaTourette said he was dumbfounded by the explanation the state provided to the television reporter.
"They don't have an on-shore call center that they can utilize, so with the program winding down, it still resides offshore," Howard said.
LaTourette said the Columbus Dispatch reported in March, 2009 that "a divided Ohio Controlling Board" approved the contract with Parago to administer the $10.5 million appliance rebate program for Ohio.
The vote was 4-3. Nine companies submitted proposals to run the program, including two from Ohio. The report said Parago would be "paid $357,300 to cover administrative costs, and was selected based on strengths including experience with appliance-based rebates, according to the request submitted to the board."
The Dispatch reported in May, 2009 about delays in issuing appliance rebates and noted that Parago had 795 consumer complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau in the last three years, but the company has an A+ rating from BBB.
The report said appliance rebate programs in Texas, Minnesota and Iowa were experiencing problems getting through to phone banks and delays in rebates.
LaTourette said he doesn't know if those states used Parago as well.

President Obama has engaged in numerous high crimes and misdemeanors. The Democratic majority in Congress is in peril as Americans reject his agenda. Yet more must be done: Mr. Obama should be impeached.
He is slowly - piece by painful piece - erecting a socialist dictatorship. We are not there - yet. But he is putting America on that dangerous path. He is undermining our constitutional system of checks and balances; subverting democratic procedures and the rule of law; presiding over a corrupt, gangster regime; and assaulting the very pillars of traditional capitalism. Like Venezuela's leftist strongman, Hugo Chavez, Mr. Obama is bent on imposing a revolution from above - one that is polarizing America along racial, political and ideological lines. Mr. Obama is the most divisive president since Richard Nixon. His policies are Balkanizing the country. It's time for him to go.
He has abused his office and violated his oath to uphold the Constitution. His health care overhaul was rammed through Congress. It was - and remains - opposed by a majority of the people. It could only be passed through bribery and political intimidation. The Louisiana Purchase, the Cornhusker Kickback, the $5 billion Medicaid set-aside for Florida Sen. Bill Nelson - taxpayer money was used as a virtual slush fund to buy swing votes. Moreover, the law is blatantly unconstitutional: The federal government does not have the right to coerce every citizen to purchase a good or service. This is not in the Constitution, and it represents an unprecedented expansion of power.

Seven-term incumbent Congressman Dennis Kucinich faces the toughest challenge of his Congressional career in 2010 against Peter Corrigan. Corrigan, the Republican candidate for Ohio's 10th Congressional District has been on the move and experts in Ohio and the national stage have begun to take notice. A conservative Republican, Corrigan is running against ultra-liberal Dennis Kucinich in a seat that was previously thought of as "un-poachable" by mainstream political pundits. However the Weekly Standard recently published an article suggesting that if Dennis Kucinich can be defeated, Corrigan is the candidate to do it. 3000 vets on motorcycles from across the USA paraded in D.C. the Sunday before Memorial Day, while a solitary, saluting Marine greeted them out on Constitution A venue... the Marine stood at salute for 3 straight hours, while the parade of roaring bikes kept on coming.... it is held in remembrance of those who've fallen in the military.... the event (or the group) is called Rolling Thunder.
President George Bush used to meet these bikers before they paraded. The camera is on the Marine a lot... watch his struggles with his emotions, and his struggles with holding that salute... the way he salutes is very touching... his head lowered, his eyes down, in reverence for the fallen...

Officials in China's Puning county, in Guangdong Province, conducted a 20-day forced sterilization campaign in April, aiming to sterilize 9,559 people who had more children than allowed, the London Times reported.
Relatives of the rule violators were imprisoned in order to force compliance with the sterilization efforts. Huang Ruifeng, who has three daughters, said that officials threatened his father. "Several days ago a village official called me and asked me or my wife to return for the surgery," Huang said, according to the London Times. "Otherwise they would take away my father."
About 100 relatives were being held in cramped conditions April 10, the Southern Countryside Daily reported. "There were some mats on the floor but the room was too small for all people to lie down and sleep, so the young ones had to stand or squat. Owing to the lack of quilts, many cuddled up to fight the cold," according to the newspaper.
"I am sure that the increase in numbers of people opting for euthanasia is largely a result of inadequate pain control," Bowman told the Daily Telegraph.
Inadequate pain control in 2010? What it means is fewer facilities, fewer health professionals willing to provide palliative care. It is said elsewhere in article.
The culture of death has permeated the consciences of so many that is is getting easier to have a mindset of, “Just let him suffer, when it gets bad enough he’ll be begging us to put him out of his misery. It will save us time, trouble and money.”
“…a government official who was instrumental in getting the law passed, told the author of a book on euthanasia that "more should have been done legally to protect people who wanted to die natural deaths," the Daily Mail reported.”
Ya think? A little late. Pro-life people tried. The culture of death was too powerful.

”Peter Singer, who (I kid you not) is a professor of bioethics at Princeton University's Center for Human Values.”
A couple of his thoughts…
‘"Is a world with people in it better than a world with no sentient beings at all?" He's not talking about Animal Liberation (of which he is an enthusiastic believer)--whether they'd be better off if we'd stop taking up space--but rather whether enough of us live a life of sufficient "quality" to justify keeping us "sentient beings" going.
If the answer is no, then we probably ought to be about the business of obtaining universal agreement to sterilize ourselves
"Therefore, if killing the hemophiliac infant has no adverse affects on the others, it would, according to the total view [of utilitarianism], be right to kill him. The main point is clear: killing a disabled infant is not morally equivalent to killing a person.
Very often it is not wrong at all." And "The only difference between killing a normal infant and a defective one is the attitude of the parents."’
We cannot ignore these people. They exert heavy influence the ethical beliefs of our next generation of lawyers, judges, police chiefs, doctors.
I’ve listen to Dennis Prager at times on WHK for several years. He is not the typical radio talk show host. He is not an evangelical Christian. He is not a partisan hack of the Republican subculture. He is not a perfect man nor does he pretend to be so. The message he brings on this brief video is to the point. Barack Obama is not the problem facing America today. Electing a new President will not solve our problems. Listen to Prager’s analysis and prescription.

I used to communicate with a woman who had beat breast cancer. While she was in treatment she joined an internet support group. Women from around the world shared their journeys.
After being cancer free for a while she just couldn’t handle going back to that forum. The women in Great Britain and Canada were denied the treatment she received. They had no hope. She didn’t know what to say to them.
We now have a health care law modeled after those in Canada and Great Britain.
Here’s the latest from the European country most like us.
Apple iPad and Pampers are my favorite products as of now.
We wonder if there is any hope in this crazy world. Then appears a wonderful commercial. I agree with Dave Andrusko:
“ …A great and terrible day will come in the not so distant future when North American culture will awaken to what we have done to more than 40-million preborn children. National consciences will be pierced by the blood of those children.
Those people whose consciences have not been completely seared will ask "What have we done!" -- and the abortion ideologues will scurry for dark places to hide.
I believe our culture will turn to people who have stood up for the sanctity, dignity and equality of all human life in search for a way back. Individual and national repentance can still lead to a revival of the ancient western moral code, and the previous Christian civilization we have largely rejected.
Perhaps we are not yet beyond the Almighty's forgiveness.”
Morning Jolt. . . with Jim Geraghty
I don't know if I'm like most Americans, but during holiday weekends I can easily go 48 hours without looking at the Internet, television news, talk radio, or newspapers outside the sports section. So, on the last day of the three-day weekend, I was suddenly struck by news that (it seems) everyone else had already digested days ago. (Dennis Hopper died!?) Like the outlandish news of a bunch of "activists" trying to play chicken with the Israeli Navy and getting the short end of the stick.
The Washington Times's Eli Lake tries to get us up to speed in a few sentences: "Protests were held throughout the Middle East and Europe on Monday in reaction to Israel's commando raid on a Turkish ship ferrying supplies to Palestinians that left at least nine people dead. Israel defended the raid and posted video on the Internet showing Israeli soldiers during the raid being attacked with metal pipes and knives by the Turkish ship's crew. The incident prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel a planned visit to Washington for a meeting with President Obama set for Tuesday. In New York, the U.N. Security Council, prompted by Arab governments, convened a special session to discuss the incident, which took place in international waters near Gaza. The White House issued a statement saying it regretted the loss of life. 'The president also expressed the importance of learning all the facts and circumstances around this morning's tragic events as soon as possible,' it said."
Digesting all this, I'm left wondering . . . the world has a lot of Rachel Corries, doesn't it? An armored bulldozer with momentum is not persuaded by your shining moral clarity. Bullets do not alter their courses because you are an outsider trying to make a bold statement about the necessity of peace in a region that hasn't known it in centuries. And when the Israeli Navy says "Stop," they're not joking around. You may think their order to stop is the most unjust thing since the last issue that got you to stand around and chant at a building, but ignoring it brings predictable hard consequences. Reality doesn't care whether or not you think it's fair. (I notice a large chunk of this crowd were Turks. I suspect these Turkish civilians got what they wanted: a chance to fight Jews.)
On NRO, Michael Rubin thinks this is the make-or-break moment for Obama's Middle East policy: "So why is it decision time for Obama? Israel feels itself increasingly in an existential crisis. Not only is Iran nearing a nuclear-weapons capability, but it has become increasingly vogue to delegitimize Israel. In the wake of the Gaza ship incident, Israel is going to see whether it has any allies left who will recognize its dilemma, recognize its security concerns, and support it as the crisis grows. Israel knows it can't trust Europe. Indeed, Europe finances many of the groups which, if they don't seek Israel's destruction directly, nevertheless indirectly support terrorism. If Obama decides it is in America's interest to make an example of Israel after the Gaza flotilla incident in order to win goodwill in Cairo, Beirut, Tehran, and Ankara, then he must also recognize that the leadership in Jerusalem is going to conclude that it cannot trust the United States to safeguard its security, and that therefore it must take matters into its own hands on any number of issues, not the least of which is Iran's nuclear program. In effect, if the White House decides to come down hard on Israel now, it is the same as giving a green light for Israel to strike Iran. That is not advocacy; it is just the realism of which President Obama is so fond."
At Contentions, Noah Pollak is appalled at some foolish Israeli decisions: "To my mind, the most astonishing thing about the flotilla disaster is that the IDF sent its elite naval commandos into a highly charged potential combat situation that was being closely scrutinized by the world media -- armed with paintball guns. . . . Those who sent an elite unit into a hostile confrontation armed with toy weapons made an incredibly stupid decision. And a uniquely Israeli one. In recent memory, Israeli military action has been violent but not decisive, bloody enough to provoke the outrage and condemnation of the world (at this point, a stubbed toe will do), but not enough to actually change facts on the ground (the Hamas and Hezbollah wars being prime examples). These halfhearted wars and battles have earned Israel demerits in world opinion without enough to show in improved strategic position. Exit question: How many new flotillas to Gaza are being planned right now in Europe, Turkey, and the Middle East?"
Congessman Joe Sestak claims the White House tried to bribe him out of the Pennsylvania Democrat Senate primary but the White House, well, we're not sure what the White House says. Both can't be right...so who is wrong? You decide.
Here’s what our British friends are up to now.
Whenever I read of research that involves the manipulation of human reproductive cells I am reminded of the horrors experienced by people on whom embryonic stem cells were used. This is not an article the NYT was likely to carry.
“Researchers in China met with a disastrous result. Fetal tissue injected into a patient's brain produced temporary improvement, but within two years the patient developed a brain tumor and died. An autopsy revealed that the fetal cells had taken root, but had then metamorphed into other types of human tissue - hair, skin and bone. These grew into the tumor, which killed the patient.”
“In some of the patients, the implanted embryonic cells apparently grew too well, churning out so much of a chemical that controls movement that they writhed and jerked uncontrollably. Dr. Paul E. Greene called the uncontrollable movements developed by some patients as "absolutely devastating." He said, "They chew constantly, their fingers go up and down, their writs flex and distend. It's a real nightmare.”
Man should not play God.
It feels like we've seen three catastrophes in the Gulf Coast in the past month. The first was the explosion that killed eleven workers; even if nothing else had happened, we would have had to reevaluate (not cancel, but reexamine) our views on offshore oil drilling to figure out just why this happened, and how much danger there was to the men (and women?) who would be out there extracting this oil.
The second was the platform sinking to the bottom of the ocean; I figure that sort of thing complicates the forensic investigation of just why this terrible disaster occurred.
But the third is the fact that it's now been a month and this well is still leaking like federal workers who didn't like Bush administration proposals. The New York Times's Bob Herbert tends to hyperventilate at the best of times, but I'll bet some folks on the right find themselves nodding a bit: "The response of the Obama administration and the general public to this latest outrage at the hands of a giant, politically connected corporation has been embarrassingly tepid. . . . The fact that 11 human beings were killed in the Deepwater Horizon explosion (their bodies never found) has become, at best, an afterthought. BP counts its profits in the billions, and, therefore, it's important. The 11 men working on the rig were no more important in the current American scheme of things than the oystermen losing their livelihoods along the gulf, or the wildlife doomed to die in an environment fouled by BP's oil, or the waters that will be left unfit for ordinary families to swim and boat in. This is the bitter reality of the American present, a period in which big business has cemented an unholy alliance with big government against the interests of ordinary Americans, who, of course, are the great majority of Americans. The great majority of Americans no longer matter."
Of course, we might add a few more examples to those unholy business-government partnerships: TARP, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, General Motors using government money to pay back a government loan and then spending more government money to run commercials bragging about paying back their government loan, and so on . . .
The liberals at FireDogLake, among those least worried about being team players: "Now the White House is having a hissy behind closed doors with the media because dammitall, they can't stop asking questions about the spill. Oh that'll work, that'll make a difference; the biggest environmental disaster our country has experienced will go away if only the media shuts up about it."
Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has decided to go his own way to protect his state; meanwhile, Capt. Edwin Stanton, who heads up the Coast Guard's response, is taking blame: "'The governor is right. It's too slow, and if it's anybody's fault, it's mine, for not pushing (BP) hard enough perhaps,' Stanton said.'We did have a problem with getting boom down here to begin with, but there seems to be boom that is in the staging areas that needs to be put out'" Later he called himself "slow and dumb," which I'm guessing was sarcasm.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin spoke at the Susan B. Anthony List celebration of life breakfast. In her remarks she said she understood how some women might consider abortion, citing her own experiences as the mother of a child with Down syndrome and the parent of an unwed teenage mother. Calling Republican women "mama grizzlies," she urged the audience to oppose the Obama administration and criticized the new health care reform law.

Don’t like redistribution of your wealth? What about redistribution of your bodily organs?
I was researching another matter when I learned at the NCBC that the state of New York may be initiating the first step.
“May 7, 2010. Assemblyman Richard Brodsky of New York State has introduced a bill that would set aside “informed consent” for organ donation and substitute in its place “presumed consent.” Under this legislation, the body of the person would be viewed as the possession of the state, and not that of the family, unless the individual made a specific indication or statement that his organs should not be removed without his permission. …
Proposals for presumed consent encourage us to view the human body as a commodity, whose parts can be harvested for the benefit of others. …violates the inherent dignity of the body, which is an essential component of a human person. Similarly, removing organs without consent treats the body of the deceased in a utilitarian manner.“

PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. -- Preston Blackwelder proudly showed off a painting of his grandmother that had hung next to the front door of his Port Wentworth home.
She was the woman who led him to God, Blackwelder said Friday.
And with that firm religious footing, Blackwelder said it would be preposterous to stop praying before meals at Port Wentworth's Ed Young Senior Citizens Center near Savannah because of a federal guideline.
"She would say pray anyway," Blackwelder said of his grandmother. "She'd say don't listen."
But Senior Citizens Inc. officials said Friday the meals they are contracted by the city to provide to Ed Young visitors are mostly covered with federal money, which ushers in the burden of separating church and state.
On Thursday, the usual open prayer before meals at the center was traded in for a moment of silence.
The dilemma is being hashed out by the Port Wentworth city attorney, said Mayor Glenn "Pig" Jones.
Tim Rutherford, Senior Citizens Inc. vice president, said some of his staff recently visited the center and noticed people praying shortly before lunch was served. Rutherford said his company provides meals like baked chicken, steak tips and rice and salads at a cost of about $6 a plate. Seniors taking the meals pay 55 cents and federal money foots the rest of the bill, Rutherford said.
"We can't scoff at their rules," he said of federal authorities. "It's a part of the operational guidelines."

While the BP oil geyser pumps millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama and members of Congress may have to answer for the millions in campaign contributions they’ve taken from the oil and gas giant over the years.
BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company’s political action committees — $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals.
During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records.

The jihadists’ deadly path to citizenship.
“As former federal immigration official Michael Cutler warned years ago: “Immigration benefit fraud is certainly one of the major ‘dots’ that was not connected prior to the attacks of September 11, 2001, and remains a ‘dot’ that is not really being addressed the way it needs to be in order to secure our nation against criminals and terrorists who understand how important it is for them to ‘game’ the system as a part of the embedding process.”
Jihadists have knowingly and deliberately exploited our lax immigration and entrance policies to secure the rights and benefits of American citizenship while they plot mass murder — and we haven’t done a thing to stop them.”

China's hidden policy of executing prisoners of the forbidden quasi-Buddhist group Falun Gong and harvesting their organs for worldwide sale has been expanded to include Tibetans, "house church" Christians and Muslim Uighurs, human rights activists said Monday.
In a news conference on Capitol Hill, several speakers, including attorney David Matas of B'nai Brith Canada and Ethan Gutmann of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, said their investigations have unearthed a grisly trade in which an estimated 9,000 members of Falun Gong have been executed for their corneas, lungs, livers, kidneys and skins.Read it here.
